How often should I clean my bird's cage?
For most birds, a weekly deep clean is a good rule of thumb. If your bird is messy you may need to clean more often, for some smaller bird species you may only need to deep clean fortnightly or monthly.
Daily cleaning
- Wash food and dry food and water bowls, bird baths and accessories where droppings have accumulated.
- Wipe down surfaces and replace cage liners or newspaper.
- Sweep or vacuum the areas surrounding the cage for debris and feathers.
Weekly cleaning
- Clean and rotate toys and perches.
- Remove and scrub the tray and grate at the bottom of the cage.
Monthly cleaning
- Scrub the whole cage including bars and base, paying attention to cracks where bacteria may breed.
When cleaning your bird's cage and accessories, ensure that you thoroughly rinse off all soap or disinfectant and only return items to use when they are fully dry to avoid mould growth.
