Reading Time: 5 minutes - short read
Often called the "Swimming Cat," the Turkish Van is a large, hardy breed with a unique water-resistant coat and a legendary fascination with water. They are very active and powerful cats that require sturdy furniture and may enjoy a shallow water-play toy or a dripping faucet to investigate. Their coat is seasonal and will "blow" in summer, so an undercoat rake and a sturdy slicker brush are necessary to manage the heavy shedding during the warmer months.

Nutrition
Correct nutrition is vital for the Turkish Van to support their high energy levels and maintain their muscular, athletic physique throughout their life.
Best food for adult Turkish Vans
Adult Turkish Vans benefit from a high-protein diet that supports their lean muscle mass and provides enough energy for their active lifestyle. Since the breed can be prone to heart conditions like HCM, look for diets enriched with taurine and omega-3 fatty acids to support cardiovascular health.
A diet with controlled calorie density is important to prevent obesity, as Turkish Vans are large-framed cats that can easily carry excess weight. Providing a mix of high-quality wet and dry food can also help ensure they stay hydrated, which is particularly important for kidney and urinary health.
What to look for
High animal-protein content to support the maintenance of strong, lean muscles.
Enrichment with taurine and omega-3 fatty acids for heart muscle support.
Balanced calorie levels to prevent weight gain in large-framed adult cats.
Best food for Turkish Van kittens
Turkish Van kittens require a nutrient-dense diet specifically formulated for growth to support their developing immune system and skeletal structure. These diets should contain DHA, an essential omega-3 fatty acid, which is critical for healthy brain and vision development during their first year.
Because they are a larger breed that can take up to three to five years to reach full maturity, it is important to provide a balanced ratio of calcium and phosphorus. High-quality ingredients ensure maximum nutrient absorption to fuel their constant play and rapid growth phases.
What to look for
Inclusion of DHA to support optimal brain and retinal development.
Precise calcium-to-phosphorus ratios to ensure healthy and steady bone growth.
Highly digestible proteins to support a sensitive, developing digestive system.
Flea & worming
Regular flea and worming treatment is essential for Turkish Vans to prevent parasitic infections that can cause skin irritation and internal disease.
Best flea and worming treatments for Turkish Vans
A comprehensive monthly spot-on treatment is typically the most effective way to protect a Turkish Van from fleas, heartworm, and intestinal worms, as well as ticks for outdoor cats. Given their thick, water-resistant coat, ensure the product is applied directly to the skin at the base of the skull to ensure proper absorption.
For cats that enjoy water play or occasional outdoor time in a secure enclosure, choosing a product with a broad spectrum of protection is key. Consistent year-round prevention is the best way to avoid the health complications associated with parasites like tapeworms or flea allergy dermatitis.
What to look for
All-in-one protection covering fleas, ticks, heartworm, and the most common intestinal worms.
Formulations that are easy to apply and fast-drying for active cats.
Always double check the weight range to ensure an effective dose
Health
Using the right health products is important for Turkish Vans to support their specific breed predispositions and ensure a long, healthy life.
Best products to keep Turkish Vans healthy
To support the heart health of a Turkish Van, owners may consider supplements rich in omega-3 fatty acids or Coenzyme Q10 as recommended by their veterinarian. Dental health products are also a priority, as preventing periodontal disease reduces the risk of systemic bacteria affecting the heart. Look for water additives that inhibit plaque formation, dental chews, and soft-bristled toothbrushes and toothpaste.
For those individuals that enjoy outdoor enclosures, sun-safe balms can be applied to white ears to prevent solar dermatitis. Keeping your cat indoors and out of the sun during the high UV parts of the day is best. Additionally, water fountains are a great health investment for this breed, as they encourage increased water intake and satisfy the breed's natural curiosity about moving water.
What to look for
Dental care solutions like toothbrushes, toothpastes and water additives to maintain oral hygiene.
Supplements containing EPA and DHA to support heart and joint function.
Cat-safe sun protection for white ears if the cat has access to sun.
Training and activity
Choosing the right toys and walking products is important for Turkish Vans to provide the mental and physical outlets their high intelligence requires.
Best toys for Turkish Vans
Turkish Vans are incredibly active and enjoy toys that allow them to practice their natural hunting and jumping skills. Because of their affinity for water, toys that float or can be used in a shallow tray of water are uniquely suited to this breed.
Interactive puzzles and treat-dispensing toys are excellent for keeping their sharp minds occupied while you are away. They also require vertical space, so tall, sturdy cat trees and climbing shelves are essential to satisfy their desire to be high above the ground.
What to look for
Water-safe toys that can be used for supervised "fishing" play.
Challenging puzzle feeders that require problem-solving to release treats.
Durable wand toys that encourage high-jumping and athletic movement.
Grooming
Choosing the right grooming products for Turkish Vans is important to maintain their unique texture, manage seasonal coat changes and reduce the risk of hairballs.
Best grooming products for Turkish Vans
Although Turkish Vans lack a downy undercoat, their semi-long fur still requires weekly brushing with a soft slicker brush or a stainless steel comb to prevent tangles. During the summer, they may shed more heavily as they "blow" their winter coat, requiring more frequent sessions.
Because their coat is naturally water-resistant and lacks oil, they stay remarkably clean and rarely need a bath unless they have gotten into something messy. However, if a bath is needed, their love of water usually makes them much more cooperative than the average feline.
What to look for
A soft-bristled slicker brush to remove loose surface hair gently.
A wide-toothed stainless steel comb for detangling the longer fur on the tail.
Gentle, pH-balanced feline shampoos if a full bath is ever required.
Sleep, travel and home
Choosing the right sleep, travel, and home products is important to accommodate the Turkish Van's size, activity level, and social nature.
Best beds and cat trees for Turkish Vans
Turkish Vans prefer elevated sleeping spots, so a tall, heavy-duty cat tree with a large perch is the best choice for this athletic breed. The tree must be very stable to withstand the force of a large cat jumping onto it at high speed.
For sleeping, they often prefer open-style beds or window perches where they can sunbathe and watch the world outside. Scratching posts should be tall enough to allow them to fully stretch their bodies while they scratch to maintain their muscle tone.
What to look for
Tall, sturdy cat trees with weighted bases for stability during jumps.
Elevated window perches or hammocks to satisfy their love of heights.
High-quality scratching surfaces made of sisal or carpet for claw maintenance.
Best travel accessories for Turkish Vans
A large, sturdy carrier is essential for the Turkish Van to ensure they have enough room to turn around and sit comfortably during travel. Because they can be quite strong, a carrier with a secure locking mechanism is a must for safety.
Travel can be stressful for any cat, so using calming pheromone sprays inside the carrier can help settle a Turkish Van during car trips. For the truly adventurous, a well-fitted harness and lead can allow them to explore the outdoors safely with their owners.
What to look for
Spacious, well-ventilated carriers suitable for a large-framed breed.
Secure, escape-proof harnesses for supervised outdoor walking and exploration.
Feliway travel sprays to provide a sense of security in new environments.
