How do I know if my dog needs a vet-prescribed diet?

Veterinary therapeutic diets, also known as prescription diets, are highly specialised to aid in the treatment and management of specific health conditions such as food allergies , urinary problems , kidney problems , pancreatitis , obesity and many others. Due to their highly specialised nutritional composition, they must only be used under the recommendation and supervision of a veterinarian, as incorrect use could inadvertently cause harm. If you suspect that your dog may benefit from a vet diet, speak with a Pet Circle vet or your own veterinarian for further advice.

Are vet diets only for dogs with specific health conditions?

While vet diets are often used to address specific health conditions like obesity , kidney disease , or allergies , there are some instances where they can be fed to healthy animals in a more preventative capacity. For example, veterinary dental diets are suitable for most healthy adult dogs, although it is still important to check with your vet to ensure that it is suitable for your dog's specific needs.

Can I mix vet diet food with regular dog food?

It's generally not recommended to mix vet diets with regular dog food. The specific formulation of a vet diet is designed to address a particular health concern, and mixing it with other foods can compromise its effectiveness. Always check with your vet prior to switching brands of vet diet or before introducing any new treats or supplements to your pet if they are on a vet diet.

How do I transition my dog to a vet-prescribed diet?

In most cases, to minimise digestive upset it is best to gradually transition your dog to a vet-prescribed diet over several days. Start by mixing a small amount of the new food with their current food and gradually increase the proportion of the vet diet until they are eating it exclusively. It is important to note however that in some cases, for example pancreatitis , it may be best to switch to the vet diet immediately to help with your dog's recovery.

Are there vet diets for dogs with allergies?

Yes, there are specialised hypoallergenic vet diets formulated for dogs with allergies. These diets often contain hydrolysed proteins, which are broken down into smaller particles to reduce the risk of allergic reactions. Consult with your veterinarian to determine the most suitable allergy-friendly diet for your dog.
