How do I choose the right size litter box for my cat?

At a minimum a litter box should be large enough for your cat to stand up, turn around, and stretch without touching the sides. Larger cats may require a large cat litter box, and remember that if you have multiple cats, you need to have at least one litter box for each cat, plus one extra.

Should I use a covered or uncovered litter box?

Whether to choose a covered or uncovered litter box comes down to a matter of your cat's personal preference, as some may prefer the privacy of a covered box, while others prefer one that is uncovered. An advantage of covered boxes is that they can reduce the amount of litter kicked out onto the floor, they also serve as a deterrent for dogs who may like to 'graze' the litter box for tasty treats. It's important to clean covered litter boxes frequently and change the litter regularly, as odours and ammonia from urine can be trapped inside, making it unpleasant for cats to use. Usually it is best to stick to an uncovered litter box for cats who have respiratory issues to avoid irritation from ammonia or dust, in these cases a high sided litter box can be a good alternative to reduce litter spillage.

How often should I clean my cat’s litter box?

The frequency with which you clean your cat's litter box will vary depending on the number of cats you have, the number of trays and the type of litter you are using. As a general rule you will need to scoop out solid waste and clumps daily and completely change the litter and wash out the box every 1 to 2 weeks. If you have multiple cats or have a cat with health issues you may need to clean more often.

What’s the best location for placing a litter box?

To ensure that your cat is comfortable using the litter box, place it in a quiet, private area where they are unlikely to be disturbed by other pets, children or loud noises (eg washing machine). Cats are naturally very fastidious and will not toilet near where they eat or drink, so keep the litter box away from food and water sources. The litter box should be easily accessible for your cat, kittens or elderly cats may require a litter box that is easier to step in and out of, while those that are more active may prefer the privacy of a top entry cat litter box. Avoid moving the litter box as it can confuse your cat.

Can I use liners in my cat’s litter box?

While it is not essential to use litter tray liners , they can make it easier to clean your cat's litter tray. Some cats may not like to use litter tray liners, if this is the case for your cat, you could also try using a litter box with a grate or removable bottom for easier cleaning. Self cleaning litter boxes are another super convenient alternative!
