Why do reptiles need heating and lighting?

Reptiles are ectothermic, meaning they rely on the environmental temperature to regulate their body temperature. Reptiles in captivity require external heat sources to maintain body temperature. They need both a basking spot with higher temperatures and a cooler end of their enclosure to allow for natural thermoregulation. Proper UVA and UVB lighting is essential for lizards and turtles, to aid in digestion, metabolism, and bone health. These reptiles need UVB exposure to produce vitamin D3 and absorb calcium, preventing metabolic bone disease. For reptiles that eat whole prey items such as pythons and monitor lizards, UV light is not essential but it is recommended as these species still benefit from UV lighting and a natural light cycle. UVB bulbs need to be replaced at least every every 6 months, as their effectiveness diminishes over time. UV output can be measured using a UV monitor.

How long should I leave my reptile’s lights on?

Reptiles need a day-night cycle to maintain their natural behaviours. Generally, lights should be on for 10–12 hours a day to mimic natural daylight. In winter, a shorter light cycle may be used for species that experience seasonal changes. Using atimer ensures consistency and prevents disruptions to their routine.

How do I monitor and maintain the correct temperature?

To keep your reptile healthy, it’s crucial to maintain the right temperature gradient in their enclosure. Use thermometers at both the warm and cool ends of the enclosure to monitor heat levels. A thermostat should be used with heating devices to prevent overheating. Digital temperature guns are also strongly recommended. Regularly check your setup to ensure your reptile has access to both a warm basking area and a cooler retreat.
