The Dalmatian is an elegant, medium-to-large dog easily recognised by its distinctive spotted coat and athletic build. Originally bred as coach dogs to run alongside horse-drawn carriages, they possess incredible stamina and a high work drive. They are loyal, intelligent, and often described as "Velcro dogs" due to their desire to be close to their human companions at all times. Because of their unique urinary metabolism and high energy levels, Dalmatians require a specific approach to nutrition and daily exercise to thrive in a domestic environment.

Nutrition
Correct nutrition is more critical for Dalmatians than many other breeds due to their predisposition to forming urinary crystals and stones. A diet formulated with specific protein sources and low purine levels is essential for managing their unique uric acid metabolism throughout their lives.
Best food for adult Dalmatians
Dalmatians are often fed a low-purine diet to minimise the risk of crystal and stone formation. Foods high in purines are most meats (particularly organ meat), fish and seafood. Dairy products, eggs, most vegetables and fruits are low in purines.
Unfortunately commercial dog food manufacturers do not record their purine levels, and though there are prescription low-purine diets available, these would not be necessary for dogs with no history of stone formation.
High moisture intake is also vital for this breed, so incorporating wet food or adding water to their kibble can help dilute the urine and support overall urinary tract health.
As a breed predisposed to joint issues such as hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia and osteoarthritis, feeding a diet with added beneficial ingredients such as glucosamine, chondroitin, green lipped mussel powder and fish oil can help to support joint health and promote better mobility.
What to look for
Select a diet with low-purine protein sources to help prevent the formation of urinary stones and crystals.
Look for a formula that supports urinary tract health by encouraging a healthy urine pH and promoting hydration.
Ensure the food contains high levels of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids to nourish their skin and keep their short coat shiny.
Best food for Dalmatian puppies
Dalmatian puppies require a specialised growth formula that supports their rapid development while being mindful of their future urinary health. These diets must provide the correct balance of calcium and phosphorus to ensure their large-breed skeleton develops at a healthy, steady rate.
High-quality, easily digestible proteins are necessary for muscle growth, but these must still be sourced carefully to avoid excessive purine intake from a young age. Look for puppy foods enriched with DHA to support brain and eye development, ensuring your puppy is as sharp and attentive as the breed is known to be.
What to look for
Choose a medium to large-breed puppy formula that ensures controlled bone and joint growth through precise mineral balancing.
Look for the inclusion of DHA to support cognitive development and enhance trainability during the puppy stage.
Prioritise diets that use high-quality, highly digestible ingredients to support a sensitive young digestive system and promote nutrient absorption.
Flea & worming
Routine flea, tick, and worming prevention is essential for Dalmatians. Consistent protection ensures they remain comfortable and free from the diseases that these pests can transmit to both pets and humans.
Best flea and worming treatments for Dalmatians
For the active Dalmatian, an all-in-one monthly chewable or spot-on treatment provides the most comprehensive protection against fleas, heartworm, and intestinal parasites.
If you live in or travel to coastal areas of Australia, ensuring your chosen product covers paralysis ticks is a critical safety measure. Always choose a product that is easy to administer to ensure you never miss a dose, keeping your dog protected year-round.
What to look for
Opt for an all-in-one preventative that covers fleas, heartworm, intestinal worms, and paralysis ticks for complete peace of mind.
Select a fast-acting formula that kills parasites on contact or shortly after feeding to prevent irritation and disease transmission.
Look for a treatment that is suitable for the dog's weight range and is easy for you to administer consistently every month.
Health
Proactive use of specific health products can help manage the breed-specific risks associated with Dalmatians, ensuring they stay healthy and active. Managing their unique internal and external needs is key to a long and happy life together.
Products to keep Dalmatians healthy
Skin-soothing conditioners and topical treatments are very useful, as the breed can be prone to skin irritations and allergies.
Because of their predisposition to urinary crystals and stones, regular vet checks of a Dallie's urine, to check pH and for any evidence of urate crystal formation, is crucial.
It is estimated that approximately 15-30% of Dalmatians have some form of hearing loss. Most Dalmatians adapt very well to partial or full deafness, as they can use their eyes and nose to help out. Something that may be beneficial when training your Dalmatian is using hand signals as well as words (or clickers, sounds etc.) to provide them with other options if deafness does occur. This is usually a hereditary condition so Dalmatians should be tested before being bred. Don't forget to visit your vet if you think your Dalmatian may have any hearing loss.
For older Dalmatians, joint support products containing glucosamine and chondroitin are recommended to maintain mobility in their large frames. However, as there have not been any formal studies into the effect of joint nutraceuticals on urinary pH, it's important to check with your vet prior to introducing any supplements and ensure regular checks of urinary pH.
What to look for
High-quality marine oils rich in EPA and DHA to help reduce inflammation and strengthen the skin barrier from the inside out.
Soothing shampoos and leave in conditioners to soothe irritation and help restore the skin's natural protective layer.
Choose gentle, pH-balanced ear cleaners that effectively remove wax and moisture without causing irritation to sensitive ears.
Training and activity
Training and physical activity are the cornerstones of a happy life for a Dalmatian, as they possess an incredible amount of energy that must be channeled constructively. Engaging their minds is just as important as exercising their bodies to prevent boredom-based behaviours.
Best toys for Dalmatians
Dalmatians love to run and chase, so durable balls, frisbees, and long-range fetch toys are ideal for burning off their physical stamina. They are also very intelligent and benefit from advanced puzzle toys and treat-dispensing games that keep them mentally engaged when indoors.
Because they can be strong chewers when bored, look for toys made from tough, puncture-resistant rubber that can withstand enthusiastic play. Scent-based toys and snuffle mats are also excellent for this breed, as they allow them to use their natural curiosity and foraging instincts.
What to look for
Select high-durability toys designed for long-distance fetch to help satisfy their immense need for physical exertion.
Look for interactive puzzle toys that challenge their problem-solving skills and provide a mental outlet for their intelligence.
Choose toys that are appropriately sized for a large breed to ensure safety and prevent potential choking hazards during play.
Best harnesses, collars and walking accessories for Dalmatians
A high-quality, front-attaching harness is often the best choice for a Dalmatian, as their natural athleticism and excitement can lead them to pull strongly on the lead.
For those who enjoy running with their dogs, a bungee lead can help absorb the shock of any sudden movements, making the experience more comfortable for both of you.
A long training lead is also a valuable tool for practicing recall in secure open spaces, allowing them some freedom while maintaining control.
Ensure all walking gear features reflective elements for safety during those necessary early morning or late evening exercise sessions.
What to look for
Choose a harness with multiple adjustment points to ensure a secure and comfortable fit that does not restrict their natural movement.
Look for padded leads and harnesses to prevent chafing during the long walks or runs that this breed requires daily.
Prioritise heavy-duty hardware and strong webbing that can reliably handle the strength of an excited large dog.
Grooming
While their coat is short, Dalmatians are significant shedders, and choosing the right grooming tools is essential for managing the hair in your home. Regular grooming also helps to keep their skin healthy and provides a regular opportunity for a full-body health check.
Best grooming products for Dalmatians
A rubber grooming mitt or a soft bristle brush is the most effective tool for removing dead hair from a Dalmatian’s short, dense coat. Regular brushing, at least a few times a week, is necessary to keep the "Dalmatian glitter" (white hair) under control on your furniture and clothes.
Use a mild, soap-free shampoo during baths to avoid drying out their skin, which can lead to itching and further shedding. Keeping their nails trimmed is also vital for their comfort, so a sturdy pair of nail clippers or a nail grinder should be part of your home grooming kit.
What to look for
Use a rubber curry brush or mitt to effectively trap and remove loose hair from the short coat without irritating the skin.
Select a hypoallergenic or oatmeal-based shampoo to maintain the natural oils of the skin and soothe any sensitivities.
Invest in quality nail maintenance tools to keep their claws at a safe length and prevent issues with their gait.
Sleep and home
After a day of running and playing, a Dalmatian needs a quiet, comfortable place to rest their athletic body and recover. Providing a high-quality bed is an important part of supporting their long-term joint health and overall comfort.
Best beds for Dalmatians
An orthopaedic memory foam bed is highly recommended for Dalmatians to provide support for their joints and prevent the development of pressure sores. They are a large breed that often likes to stretch out, so ensure the bed is spacious enough for them to lie fully extended.
Many Dalmatians enjoy a bed with a raised edge or bolster, which provides a comfortable place to rest their head and a sense of security while they sleep. Look for beds with durable, removable covers that can be easily washed to manage the short, stiff hairs that tend to weave into fabrics.
What to look for
Select a bed with a high-density memory foam base to provide essential support for a large dog's joints and spine.
Choose a bed with a robust, washable cover that can withstand the frequent cleaning required due to their shedding.
Ensure the bed is sized correctly for a large breed, allowing them to stretch out or curl up comfortably as they choose.
