Best Toys for Small Parrots

LAST UPDATED 13 Feb 2024

This article is written by Pet Circle's qualified veterinarian, Dr Nicole Wynne

Little parrots like budgies and cockatiels make wonderful pets, but it can be difficult to work out what toys are safe for them, what they need to eat and how they should be housed. Even though they don’t take up as much space as larger birds, it is still important to ensure that they have safe but entertaining toys, and appropriate cage furniture. Effectively managing these husbandry issues helps to reduce potential health issues such as accidental trauma and behavioural problems. The adage “prevention is better than cure” is absolutely true for our feathered friends!

Why is choosing the right parrot toys important?

Although they’re small, these parrots are still very intelligent and adapted to a changing, malleable environment. They have a strong need to play, pull things apart, and shape their environment, and when they can’t perform these behaviours, they are more likely to develop behavioural issues. They are also social animals and have evolved to live in a flock, and so they also need social interaction, whether from other birds or from people.

Although toys and cage furniture can’t remove their need for socialization, it can help get some of their mental energy out so that they are less likely to scream, become aggressive, or destructive. However, it is also important to ensure that toys and cage furniture are safe. Some cheap toys may be made out of toxic metals that can cause heavy metal poisoning if ingested. Other toys may pose an injury risk. Some rope toys can also cause crop blockages if ingested.

Four reasons why it's important to choose the right parrot toys are:
  1. Natural materials: Materials like hemp, jute, and other natural fibres are destructible, which birds love, but also much less likely to cause injuries like entanglement and crop blockages.
  2. Safe play: Birds love to destroy things, and providing safe items for them to destroy is not only a great way of maintaining mental health, but also reducing the risk of them destroying something they shouldn’t
  3. Safe metals: Metal toys are fine as long as they are well made, and made of quality stainless steel. Stainless steel is not toxic, and if they are well made, they are less likely to break or splinter. Ensure that metal toys also can’t get stuck on your bird, and if you find any broken pieces or sharp edges, remove the toy immediately.
  4. Easy to monitor: Just like human children, all toys should be monitored daily for signs of unsafe wear, hygiene, and deterioration. They should also be easy to remove from the enclosure.

  • Dried yucca cactus is safe to ingest
  • Can be modified to use as a food puzzle toy
  • Encourages natural chewing behaviours

Cons

  • Will need to be monitored and replaced when unsafe

What our customers say: "Ole Bird Kabob was brilliant! Given to us as a gift, we will be getting more! My Pink and grey Galah loved it, as did my Alexandrine, and our Greenwing macaw adored it utterly!!! I only wish they came in ten times the size!! A great toy for all sizes of parrots and aviaries with mixed species. What the bigger birds dropped in the way of chunks they hadn't reduced to splinters and powder , was also picked up and 're-chewed' up by smaller birds again, Outstanding!!!" - Dr Manolas

Best Hanging Toys for Small Parrots

Birdie Parrot Triple Jute Ring

Pros

  • Made from biodegradable jute
  • Gentle on feet
  • Less likely than cotton or synthetic to cause crop issues
  • Good option for perch variety
  • Easy to use with most enclosures

Cons

  • Low risk of issues with heavy ingestion of fibres

Parrots love a rope swing, but many rope swings are made with cotton or other more durable fibres, making them a risk for crop blockages and toe injuries. This jute swing helps to reduce the risk of these accidents while also allowing our parrots access to a different kind of perch.

This perch can be used as a hanging perch, or secured at two ends to make a bridge. You can even get creative and add other hanging components to turn it into a bird gym or a foraging toy!

What our customers say: "My cockatiel loves this toy. She sleeps on it every night and it's soft on the feet" - Mazz

Best Food and Water Bowls

Birdie Stainless Steel Coop Cup and Clamp

Pros

  • Fits almost any enclosure and easy to install
  • Easy to clean and dishwasher safe
  • 100% non-toxic stainless steel
  • Suitable for many kinds of foods like chop, seed, and pellets
  • Lots of different sizes

Cons

  • If positioned under a perch, food may be soiled easily

While it seems like an inconsequential detail, food and water bowls are actually really important for birds, as plastic bowls accumulate scratches over time that harbour bacteria, and poor quality metal bowls may be made out of toxic heavy metals. Stainless steel bowls are durable, and are also food-safe, just like stainless steel kitchen equipment.

This design allows for easy removal of the bowl for washing, and the clamp system makes it simple to rearrange your bird’s enclosure, or even add extra bowls for different foods.

What our customers say: "Perfect size for my young bird and the clamps are really good and very b and stable." - Lyn, VIC

Zeez Durapet Premium Stainless Steel Cat Bowl

Pros

  • Stainless steel construction with non-slip rubber base
  • Easy to clean and dishwasher safe
  • Available in 3 different sizes
  • Suitable for many kinds of foods like chop, seed, and pellets
  • Shallow and easy to access

Cons

  • No holder, so must sit on the floor or a solid shelf
  • More prone to soiling
  • Birds may chew on the rubber bottom

Some enclosures do well with food and water options on the ground, and some species like turquoise parrots prefer to feed on the ground. Although these bowls were designed with cats in mind, the features suit birds very well, such as the non-slip base, stainless steel construction, and shallow depth. It is also dishwasher safe, and the price point makes it easy to get several to swap out while others are being washed.

However, placing feeding stations on the ground does make soiling an increased risk, so careful placement is required, as well as more frequent maintenance and cleaning.

What our customers say: "I bought the 200ml size. Good quality, doesn't get knocked around by ravenous cats, and just the right size for their wet food. I've tried so many types over the years but this is the winner. So good, that I have bought a couple more. Good price for the quality too- Helen, ACT

What to look for in toys for small parrots

Choosing toys for small parrots is essential for their mental and physical well-being. Here are some factors to consider when selecting toys for small parrots.

Size Appropriate

Ensure that the toys are suitable for the size of your parrot. Small parrots, such as budgies, lovebirds, or cockatiels, need toys that they can easily manipulate and play with, and most importantly, that they can't get stuck or injured with.

Materials

Choose toys that are made from safe and non-toxic materials. Avoid toys with small, easily ingestible parts that could be a choking hazard, or toys made from unknown metals as they may be toxic heavy metals like lead.

Variety

Provide a variety of toys to keep your parrot engaged and prevent boredom. Include toys with different purposes, textures, shapes, and colours to stimulate their senses.

Chewable Toys

Parrots have a natural instinct to chew. Look for toys that are designed for safe chewing, like wooden blocks, safe leather, and vegetable-dyed toys.

Foraging Toys

Encourage natural behaviours by including foraging toys. These toys require the parrot to work for their treats, providing mental stimulation and preventing boredom.

Interactive Toys

Toys that allow interaction, such as puzzle toys, can provide mental stimulation and help keep your parrot entertained.

Noise-Making Toys

Some parrots enjoy toys that make noise, such as bells. However, be mindful of the noise level, as excessive noise can be stressful for your pet and yourself!

Swings and Perches

Swings and perches offer your parrot a place to exercise and relax. Make sure they are of appropriate size and securely attached to the cage, as well as safe for their feet and made from natural fibres.

Rotate Toys

Keep things interesting by rotating toys regularly. This prevents your parrot from getting bored with the same toys and encourages exploration.

Safety Considerations

Regularly inspect toys for wear and tear. Replace any damaged or broken toys to prevent injury.

Avoid Toxic Materials

Be cautious about toys that might have paint or materials that could be toxic. Stick to toys specifically designed for birds.

Social Interaction

Spend time playing with your parrot and its toys. Parrots are social creatures, and interaction with their human companions is crucial for their well-being.

Remember that each parrot is unique, so observe your bird's preferences and adjust their toy selection accordingly. Providing a stimulating environment with a variety of toys will contribute to your small parrot's happiness and mental health.
