Fresh cat food is becoming increasingly popular among pet owners who want to give their feline companions meals that look and smell just like real food - because they are! Many cat owners want to feed their pets the very best, but with so many different diets, it can be confusing to know which option is right for your cat.
While commercially available dry and canned foods provide everything a cat needs for complete nutrition, more pet owners are keen to explore alternative options such as fresh food. This style of feeding is gaining popularity for its natural, minimally processed approach designed to support your cat’s health in a more wholesome and digestible way.
Let’s explore the benefits of fresh food and see whether it could be a valuable addition to your cat’s diet.
What is fresh cat food?
Fresh food refers to gently cooked or raw meals made with meat, fish, veggies, and the essential vitamins and minerals your cat needs. Unlike some processed pet food options, fresh meals are kept refrigerated or frozen to lock in nutrients and flavour, without the need for artificial preservatives.
These diets tend to focus on quality protein and healthy fats, similar to what cats would naturally eat in the wild. Because they’re made with simple, whole ingredients and less processing, fresh diets help preserve key nutrients that support your cat’s overall health and wellbeing.
What are the benefits of fresh cat food?
1. Supporting healthy digestion
Cats have specific protein requirements. Fresh meals made from high-quality meat and organs are closer to what cats would naturally eat, making them easier to digest for some cats. Because ingredients are cooked gently (or not at all, in raw diets), vital nutrients like amino acids and fatty acids remain intact, helping to support muscle maintenance, coat health, and energy levels.
It’s now well recognised that a healthy gut plays a vital role in overall wellbeing. The balance of bacteria in the gut, known as the gut microbiome, plays a crucial role in digestion, nutrient absorption, and even mood and immune function. Diets rich in fresh, natural ingredients help maintain a diverse and thriving microbiome. The natural fibres found in fresh fruits and vegetables act as gentle prebiotics, feeding beneficial gut bacteria and promoting healthy digestion and better stool quality.
2. Enhanced hydration
Many cats don’t drink enough water on their own, which can contribute to dehydration, urinary tract issues, and kidney problems. Fresh food naturally contains a high moisture content, around 60–75% water, helping to boost your cat's hydration with every meal.
This built-in hydration supports kidney function, helps dilute urine (reducing the risk of crystals and stones), and promotes overall cellular health.
3. Improved palatability
Even the fussiest feline is often won over by the aroma, taste, and texture of fresh food. Because it’s made with real meat and minimal processing, it smells and tastes closer to what cats instinctively crave.
This improved palatability encourages consistent eating habits, which is particularly helpful for cats that are prone to being fussy with their food. This helps maintain a healthy weight, as cats are more likely to eat the appropriate portion when they find the food enjoyable.
Transitioning to fresh cat food
Cats are creatures of habit and may take time to adjust to new foods. Transition slowly over 7–10 days to prevent tummy upsets, start by mixing a small amount of fresh food with their current diet, gradually increasing the proportion each day.
Always follow safe food handling and storage practices: keep meals refrigerated or frozen as directed, and discard uneaten food after mealtime.
If your cat has a sensitive stomach, consult your vet before transitioning. Some cats benefit from gradual microbiome adaptation, introducing fresh food too quickly can temporarily upset digestive balance.
