Can Cats Eat Grapes?

Reading Time: 2 minutes - short read
Grapes, sultanas and raisins are common pantry staples, but did you know they pose a severe and potentially fatal threat to feline friends? While the toxicity of grapes in dogs is widely known, many cat owners are unaware that grapes are equally dangerous for cats.
Why are grapes toxic to cats?
Ingestion of grapes and their dried forms can cause cats to develop acute kidney failure.
Veterinary experts are still investigating the exact mechanism that causes this toxicity, but recent studies suggest that tartaric acid may be the primary culprit.
- No safe level: There are no known safe amounts of grapes or raisins for a cat to consume. Even a tiny piece can be dangerous.
- Dried fruits: Raisins, sultanas, and currants contain the same toxic properties and are just as dangerous - if not more concentrated - than fresh grapes.
Signs of grape toxicity
If your cat has ingested grapes, raisins, or sultanas, signs usually appear within 24 hours. You should monitor your cat closely if you suspect they have gotten into your snack bowl, or any foods containing these ingredients.
Common signs include:
- Vomiting or diarrhoea
- Severe lethargy or weakness
- Loss of appetite
- Increased thirst (polydipsia)
- Increased urination (polyuria) or a sudden decrease in urination
What to do if your cat has eaten grapes
If your cat has eaten grapes or any of their dried forms, take immediate action:
- Contact a vet immediately: Do not wait for symptoms to appear. Call your local vet or your nearest 24/7 emergency veterinary clinic. Your vet may need to induce vomiting to remove the toxins before they are absorbed into the bloodstream.
- Supportive treatment: Your vet may suggest supportive care such as intravenous fluid therapy and blood testing to monitor kidney function.
