What should I feed my pet reptile in Australia?

Bearded dragons and blue-tongue lizards are omnivores and require a mix of fresh vegetables and insects like crickets, silkworms, and grasshoppers, while many gecko species primarily eat insects. Depending on the species, turtles can be carnivorous, consuming a varied diet of fish and insects, or omnivorous, incorporating leafy greens and vegetables alongside protein sources. Pythons, such as carpet pythons, eat whole prey like frozen-thawed, ethically sourced rodents. Always follow species-specific feeding guidelines to ensure proper nutrition.

How often should I feed my Australian reptile?

Feeding frequency varies depending on the species, age, and size of your reptile. Bearded dragons and blue-tongue lizards can be fed fresh vegetables daily, with insects offered several times a week. Turtles should be fed a mix of plant and protein sources every day or every second day. Pythons usually eat once every 1–4 weeks, depending on their age, size and metabolism. Some larger pythons may only eat every 6-8 weeks. Always monitor your reptile’s weight and adjust feeding accordingly.

Can I feed my reptile live insects?

Yes, many Australian pet reptiles benefit from live insects. However, all insects should be gut-loaded (fed nutritious foods before being offered to your reptile) to provide optimal nutrition. It is illegal and unethical to feed live vertebrates (such as mice) to snakes in Australia, so always use frozen-thawed prey instead. Any uneaten food items should be removed promptly.

Do I need to give my reptile supplements?

Yes, most captive reptiles, particularly lizards and turtles require calcium and vitamin D3 supplements to support bone health and prevent metabolic bone disease. Dusting insects and/or vegetables with a reptile-safe calcium powder is recommended, especially for species like bearded dragons and blue-tongue lizards. As snakes eat whole prey items, supplementation is usually unneccessary. To determine the best supplements for your reptile it’s always best to consult a reptile vet for specific guidance.
