Frequently Asked Questions:
Why do dogs lick you?
Our pets are a beloved part of our family, however, licking is not always a welcomed behaviour from our dogs. Although some owners or guests may find annoying, licking can be a normal behaviour expressed by dogs. Dogs will lick humans for a variety of reasons:
- Attention - your dog may be trying to redirect your focus to them.
- Salt - humans sweat, which is mostly water but will contain a small amount of salt. Your dog may like the taste and lick you after an exercise session for this reason.
- Instinct - many animals, including dogs, will lick their young and groom each other. Your dog may lick you instinctively to groom you and nurture you.
- Health - in some cases, licking can indicate signs of discomfort, pain or anxiety. If your dog licks excessively, speak to your veterinarian to ensure there are no underlying behavioural or medical causes.
