Frequently Asked Questions
What are the benefits of crate training a dog?
Crate training is a valuable training tool and can be useful in a variety of situations when they are puppies or adults. Some of the benefits to crate training your dog or puppy are:
- Reduced accidents: dogs will naturally try to avoid peeing and pooping where they sleep. This can be very helpful when you are going through the motions of puppy toilet training. Remember that your puppy will only have a very little bladder, so regular toilet opportunities is required, especially after eating and drinking or just waking up.
- Safe space: Your dog's crate can be a safe place for your furry friend. This is their space that they can retreat to when they want some comfort, peace and quiet.
- Reduce house damage: crate training can assist with destructive behaviours while out for a few hours. This is particularly helpful during the puppy teething phases and potentially save your furniture! It can also ensure your dog doesn't scavenge bins, chew electrical cords or ingest any toxins that would otherwise be harmful to their health.
- Transport and medical: there may be occasions where you have to transport your dog via car or plane. Crate trained dogs are far less stressed and familiar with the space, allowing a smoother journey. Unfortunately, there will be occasions your dog will need to stay for the day, or overnight in a hospital cage at the veterinary clinic. Again, crate training makes this a far more familiar concept, which can reduce some of the stress associated with a hospital stay.
