Maine Coons are gentle giants, and feeding one isn’t quite the same as feeding the average cat. If you’re wondering how long to keep your kitten on kitten food, what kibble suits a big cat or how much to serve, our vets have you covered.

The short answer: The best cat food for a Maine Coon is a complete and balanced kitten food until around 12-15 months, then a high quality adult food with a kibble size that suits a large jaw. Maine Coons mature more slowly than most cats, so they need kitten nutrition for longer, and portion control still matters for their joints and heart. Below, our vets cover when to switch, which kibble suits, how much to feed and the products we recommend.

How long do Maine Coons need kitten food?

    maine coon kitten relaxing indoors

Most Maine Coons need kitten food until around 12 to 15 months, a few months longer than the average cat. They mature slowly and some are still filling out at 15 to 18 months or later, so we don't rush the switch. Kitten food has the extra energy, protein and minerals a growing frame needs.

When it's time, transition across 7 to 10 days, mixing in a little more adult food each day. If your Maine Coon still looks lean at 15 months, ask your vet to check their body condition first.

What size and type of kibble suits a Maine Coon?

Any complete and balanced kibble can suit a Maine Coon, but larger pieces are often easier for a big cat to pick up and crunch. Some adult formulas use a larger kibble shaped for a bigger jaw, and plenty of Maine Coons do well on them. If your Maine Coon is fussy or gulps their food, try offering a couple of kibble sizes alongside a little wet food and see which they prefer.

Wet food adds moisture, and a mix of wet and dry suits most cats (see dry vs wet cat food). Whatever you choose, check the label says complete and balanced for your cat's life stage, as covered in our guide to cat nutrition by life stage.

Can diet help protect a Maine Coon's heart?

    vet examining maine coon cat

Diet can't prevent hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), the thickening of the heart muscle that Maine Coons are prone to, because it's largely genetic. However, food can cover the basics: a complete and balanced diet supplies enough taurine, an amino acid cats must get from their food, and a lean body avoids extra strain.

Chat to your vet about genetic testing and heart screening (an ultrasound of the heart), and ask any breeder for the parents' results (see how to find a good cat breeder). In clinic, baseline heart imaging is often most useful when a murmur is picked up or before breeding, because an early picture helps us track any changes over time.

Our heart disease in cats guide explains the signs to watch for, and the Maine Coon breed guide covers other breed health points.

How much should a growing Maine Coon eat?

Start with the feeding guide on your kitten food packet for their age and weight, then adjust using body condition and steady weekly weight gain. Maine Coons often eat more than a typical kitten, but a steady climb matters more than any single weight. Weigh weekly and aim for ribs you can feel easily but not see. Kittens under about 6 months do best with 3 to 4 small meals a day, easing to 2 from about 6 months of age.

For cats with significant amounts of body weight to lose, the prescription weight loss diets are more effective, however they do need to be used only on the recommendation of your vet. For more tips on weight loss, check out our article on How to Help Your Cat Lose Weight. We also recommend learning how to tell if your cat is overweight.

What our customers say: "I came across this product purely by chance as I was after a good quality weight maintenance dried food that I could rely on to stop my cat gaining weight unnecessarily because she is very lazy. I haven't turned back since! Not only is this product manufactured by Hill's with the veterinarian's tick of approval, my cat loves it and would probably eat more than the recommended dose if I went ahead and let her - it's just awesome!"

What our vets say: "Hills Perfect Weight uses the science of nutrigenomics to make an overweight cat's metabolism act like that of a lean cat. The same science goes into their prescription weight loss diets, but it's fabulous to have a non-prescription option to recommend to those cats who are not quite at the point of needing a vet diet." - Dr Antonella
