As a new kitten parent, no doubt you want the best for your bouncy new fur baby; and that includes their nutrition. With so many wet and dry kitten food on the market, how can you be sure your precious fluffball is getting the best?

The best kitten food is a complete and balanced kitten (or all life stages) diet from a brand with solid research and quality assurance behind it, that your kitten actually enjoys eating. Our vets look at four things: ingredients, science and quality assurance, palatability and where the food is made. Many of us suggest a mix of wet and dry, and most kittens stay on kitten food until around 12 months of age

Not all kitten diets are created equal, and there's a lot of conflicting information out there on the grand old internet. Many kitten parents want to know "Is raw food best for kittens?", "How long should you feed a kitten food for?" "Which kitten food is made in Australia?" "How do I know how much to feed a kitten?" We've covered these below, with our top picks in each category. For portion sizes, see our guide to how much to feed a kitten. If you'd like to see all of our wet and dry picks in one place, head to our guides to the best wet kitten food and best dry kitten food.

We've discussed these factors below, included our top picks for each category.

How do I know if a kitten food is good quality?

The ingredients list can give you some hints, but it doesn't tell the whole story, because nutrient balance, quality assurance and digestibility matter too. Lower quality pet foods may use vague terms such as 'meat' (instead of 'chicken') or 'cereals' (instead of 'corn'), which means the manufacturer can change the ingredients batch by batch depending on what is cheapest at the time. Cheaper foods may also add artificial colours, flavours and gelling agents to make them look more appealing. Cats don't see colour the way we do, so these extras are there to please your eyes only, and they're not needed.

Higher quality kitten foods list specific ingredient terms and don't change the recipe between batches. They may also include extras to support overall health, such as antioxidants or fish oil for skin and coat health.

A quick word on raw: vets are generally cautious about raw diets for kittens, because it's hard to get the nutrient balance right for growth and raw food can carry bacteria. Our guide to raw diets for pets goes through the pros and cons.

Which kitten foods rate best on ingredients?

    • Feline Natural has a high meat content and 'whole prey' ingredients including organs and tripe, and is widely reviewed as a real cat pleaser.
    • Ziwi is made from premium New Zealand animal protein, with novel proteins like rabbit and mackerel, and is marked for 'all lifestages', so it's balanced for growing kittens.
    • Black Hawk is proudly made in Australia from high quality proteins, vegetables and fruits with no unnecessary fillers
    • Vetalogica is high in meat, grain free and made in Australia.

Does the science behind a kitten food matter?

Yes. Quality also comes down to a brand's manufacturing process, research and reputation. It's all well and good to have natural ingredients, but a manufacturer should also base recipes on scientific research, keep hygiene standards high, and deliver a consistent balance of fat, energy, vitamins and minerals for growing kittens. The more regular tests a manufacturer does to check its food, the better.

Which kitten food brands rate best on science and quality assurance?

    • Hill's Science Diet makes a wide range of wet and dry kitten food, is made in the USA, is widely recommended by vets and is heavily supported by science, having decades of studies to help set nutritional guidelines and formulate therapeutic diets.
    • Royal Canin is one of our most popular brands, known for being highly palatable, with wet, dry and even a mother and kitten formula that can be fed to kittens and their mum while she nurses.
    • Pro Plan makes scientifically formulated food for specific lifestages,
    • Advance is made in Mars Petcare facilities in Australia, and backed by research from the WALTHAM institute in the UK.

What is the most palatable kitten food?

Based on customer reviews, these four brands are most often reviewed as readily accepted: Royal Canin, Feline Natural, Ivory Coat and Paw & Spoon. Every kitten has different flavour preferences though, so what works for one might not work for yours. Palatability matters because kittens need to eat regularly to fuel their fast metabolism and growth, and very young kittens can become unwell if they skip meals. If your kitten stops eating, it's worth a call to your vet.

Why are some kittens so fussy? Rather than being 'fussy', some kittens may simply be bored. Cats are natural hunters of different prey, so if your kitten seems a little fussy, it may help to rotate between flavours, particularly different meat proteins. Take care though, because kittens can get loose stools with sudden diet changes, so introduce any rotation slowly.

Should I choose an Australian made kitten food?

Many kitten owners look for Australian made food, and there are good reasons to. Australian facilities are covered by national manufacturing, quality assurance and workplace safety standards, and buying local helps support our economy. That said, plenty of excellent kitten foods are made overseas, so country of manufacture is one factor to weigh up rather than a deal breaker.

Top Australian made brands are Advance, Ivory Coat, Black Hawk and Vetalogica.

Top Recommendations from our Vet Team

"I really like the Royal Canin range of kitten food. This premium kitten food contains highly digestible nutrients to help support healthy bone and muscle development. It includes an exclusive combination of nutrients to maintain optimal digestive health and stool quality, as well as antioxidants and prebiotics to support your kitten's natural immune defences."

    Dr. Teagan

"While I like different brands for different reasons, I have always been impressed with the Feline Natural line of cat food, which is balanced for all lifestages. Feline Natural provides different protein sources such as mackerel, beef, and lamb - which is usually quite hard to find for kitten food. I recommend including this in a rotation with other top quality kitten diets."

    Dr. Carla

"Hills Science Diet is my go-to for kitten food. This premium line of food is scientifically formulated to meet the requirements of your kitten's growing needs. The wet food is available in cans or handy pouches, and different flavours afford plenty of variety for fussy cats."

    Dr. Elise

"I routinely recommend Advance for kittens. It is highly palatable, and made in Australia from premium ingredients. With recipes based on research from the WALTHAM Institute, and a strong veterinary influence, you know you're getting the best in terms of balanced nutrients!"
