How do I choose the right Royal Canin diet for my pet?

Choosing the right food for your pet can be overwhelming, but Royal Canin offers a few ways to find the right match. A great starting point is to consider the four key factors for your pet: Age: Royal Canin offers a range of age-specific diets, from puppy and kitten diets, through adult and mature diets, and also senior diets. Dogs of different ages have very different nutritional requirements and so choosing a diet that meets their age and lifestage is the best place to start. Health needs: Does your pet have any specific health sensitivities, like a delicate stomach or skin issues? Alongside lifestage, this should be one of your first considerations in choosing a Royal Canin diet. If your pet has any underlying health conditions, your treating veterinarian should be your first port of call when it comes to dietary advice. In many cases, there may be prescription diets which are the best option to help manage your pet's condition, however there are also a range of non-prescription Royal Canin foods which are targeted towards health conditions also. Breed: Specific breeds have unique requirements, and Royal Canin offers tailored diets for many popular breeds. If you are unsure which Royal Canin diet is best for your pet, reach out to our Vet Squad or your treating veterinarian for guidance.

Are the breed-specific diets necessary?

While not strictly 'necessary' for every pet of a particular breed, these diets are formulated based on extensive scientific research into the unique traits and common health predispositions of each breed. For example, a Labrador Retriever diet might have a specific kibble shape to encourage chewing and slow down eating, as they are often prone to eating too quickly. It may also contain specific nutrients to support joint health, a common concern for the breed. Similarly, a diet for a Persian cat may have a unique kibble shape to make it easier for their flat-faced ( brachycephalic ) jaw to pick up, and include fibres to help manage hairballs. Think of it as providing tailored nutrition that goes one step further to support your pet's unique characteristics. Read through our Breed Specific Dog Food Guide for more information.

What is the difference between the retail diets and the veterinary diets?

Royal Canin's retail diets are designed to support the health of well pets, and those who may be prone to certain conditions. The veterinary-exclusive diets , on the other hand, are therapeutic diets formulated to help manage specific health conditions. These diets are an important part of a treatment plan prescribed by a veterinarian for pets with diagnosed health issues such as kidney disease, urinary problems, allergies, or gastrointestinal disorders. Due to their specific formulations, these diets should only be fed under the guidance of a vet. For more information, read through our guide to Prescription Diets for Pets .
