Labradors are friendly, food-loving dogs that make brilliant family pets, but that love of food can lead to overeating and weight gain. Being a large breed, they're also prone to osteoarthritis, and extra weight only adds more pressure on the joints. So it's worth feeding a premium dog food with adjusted calorie and fat levels for weight control, plus added joint support ingredients.
If your Lab scoffs their food, a puzzle feeder or snuffle mat slows them down, helps them feel fuller for longer, and adds some mental enrichment too.
A large breed diet suits healthy Labradors well, while weight control, joint care or vet prescription diets are there for dogs with specific needs. Check out our list of the best dry foods for Labradors, our guide on choosing food by breed, and our Labrador Breed Guide for more.
Four things to consider when choosing a dry food for Labradors:
- Health conditions: See your vet first if your Lab has a diagnosed condition, as a prescription diet may be the best fit. Otherwise, there are retail diets that help prevent common Lab issues like obesity and osteoarthritis.
- Complete and balanced: Make sure the diet suits your Lab's life stage and meets AAFCO or FEDIAF guidelines, so they're getting the right nutrients in the right amounts.
- Age: Pups need energy-dense food for growth, while seniors need fewer calories and less fat but easily digestible food to stay in good condition. More on lifestage nutrition.
- Quality: Premium foods are more digestible (smaller, firmer stools), consistent batch to batch, and often packed with extra good stuff like omega fatty acids for joints and skin. Reading labels and knowing your dog's ingredients helps you pick the best fit.

What should I look for in a Labrador food?
When looking for a diet for your Labrador, you want to make sure you are meeting their unique nutritional requirements whilst also providing prevention for their common health problems, including:
Tailored Large Breed Nutrition
Being a large breed (having an adult weight of over 25kg), Labradors require a diet that contains the ideal levels of lean protein to support strong muscles. Many large breed diets also contain added ingredients for joint health. Some also have controlled calories and additional ingredients such as L-carnitine to help maintain your Labrador at an ideal weight. For more information, read through our guide to the Best Dog Food for Large Breeds. Other large breeds like Golden Retrievers and German Shepherds have similar nutritional needs to Labradors - see our picks for Best Dog Food for Golden Retrievers and Best Dog Food for German Shepherds.
Weight Control
Unfortunately Labradors are prone to obesity, most commonly due to overnutrition. As we all know, Labradors love to eat and it's therefore important to look for a diet which is lower in calories and fat to prevent weight gain in this breed.
Joint Support
Being a large breed dog, Labradors are unfortunately prone to joint problems - most commonly osteoarthritis, as well as hip and elbow dysplasia. Therefore, ingredients to support healthy joints and bones such as glucosamine, chondroitin, green lipped mussel and omega 3 fatty acids (DHA and EPA) are great additions to your Labrador's diet.
Skin Support
Labradors have a dense coat, and are prone to developing acute moist dermatitis (commonly known as 'hot spots'), particularly during warm weather or after swimming. Added ingredients to look out for in your Labrador's diet such as omega fatty acids, zinc, vitamin E and linoleic acid are great ways to support and nourish your Labrador's natural skin barrier function, and keep their coat shiny.
