Dog leads are essential when taking your dog out and about. Dog leads can help keep your dog safe and secure, as well as allowing you to have control during walks. At Pet Circle we stock a wide range of dog leads of many different varieties such as hands-free leads, retractable leads and sustainable leads.
These are some of the factors to consider when choosing a lead for your dog:
Size of your dog - Small dogs need lightweight, long leads whereas heavier, shorter leads are more suitable for big dogs
Level of training - Well trained dogs that don't pull do well with a traditional flat lead with a clip on one end and a loop or handle for your hand on the other. Dogs that pull can benefit from a back and front attaching harness for better control.
Activities - It is best to choose a short lead if you are walking your dog in crowded areas. Long leads and retractable leads can be used in wide open spaces as they give your dog freedom to move while you still maintain some control. A hands free lead is essential for running or cycling with your dog. You may need more than one type of lead if your dog has an active social life and participates in a variety of activities.
In most areas of Australia, there are laws that require all dogs to be on lead in public places unless in a designated off-lead area. The dangers of walking your dog off lead outside of your home far outweigh any benefits your dog may get by being allowed to run free. Having your dog on a lead gives you control in unexpected situations like a stray dog running towards you.
All dogs are different and will learn at their own pace. The key to getting your dog to walk well on a lead is consistent, positive reinforcement training from as young as 8 weeks of age. Pups are in their prime socialisation period between 8 and 16 weeks so this is the perfect time to start working on behaviours that you want to continue for the rest of your dog's life.
