Did you know that 80% of cats over the age of three will have dental disease? If you notice that you cat has bad breath or is reluctant to chew their food then it is a sign to get a dental check up at your vet. If left unchecked, poor dental hygeine can progress into painful diseases such as gingivitis, periodontitis and tooth resorption. It is important to maintain good dental care in all cats as prevention is much better than treatment! Dental toys are one of the easy ways to incorporate dental care into your cat's daily life, as they are designed to gently clean your cats teeth and gums as they play and chew.
Depending on your cat's individual needs, dental toys alone may not be sufficient preventative dental care and are not a replacement for veterinary dental treatments. Check out our Cat Dental Care Guide for more tips on teeth brushing, diets and other dental preventions. Don't be afraid to ask one of our Pet Circle Vets or your local vet if you have any concerns about your cat's dental and oral health.
Petstages Fresh Breath Mint Stick | A must buy! These are soooo worth it. All four of my cats play with these, especially my Siamese. Absolutely love batting them around, rubbing their face all overthem, getting high etc. - ERIN |
Petstages Dental Cherriest | This toy is great - my cat loves chewing it, the bell is soft but just enough to catch attention and it is light so fun for them to carry around in their mouth. They love to chase it so great for a game of catch. - FI |
Dental disease is a term commonly used to describe diseases relating to teeth and gums such as gingivitis, periodontitis and tooth resorption. Gingivitis is the inflammation of gums that usually results from a prolonged build up of plaque on the teeth. Plaque entraps a lot of bacteria that leads to inflammation and infection around the gum line. Prevention and treatment of gingivitis with home oral care and/or veterinary dental care is key to preventing more severe and damaging dental diseases. Periodontitis is what happens if gingivitis is left untreated. The bacteria invades below the gumline, resulting in more severe inflammation and damage to the tissue that attaches the tooth to the gum and bone, leading to teeth becoming loose and eventually falling out.
Brushing your teeth is the best way to maintain oral health, that's why we as humans brush our teeth daily! The same goes for our feline friends, however since they can't brush their teeth themselves, we can brush their teeth for them using cat-friendly toothbrushes and toothpaste. Cat dental toys are designed to mimic toothbrushing with specially designed materials that can clean the surface of your cats teeth and gums as they chew them!
Pet Circle also has a wide variety of other cat dental care products all in the one place.
