If you're a dog parent looking for reliable, safe, and effective solutions to protect your four-legged friends from tapeworm infestation, you're in the right place. At Pet Circle we stock a range of tapeworm tablets and chews for dogs of all ages, breeds and size.
Protecting your dog from tapeworm infection is important for their overall health for your dog and safety of your family. The two most important tapeworms to be aware of in Australian dogs are the flea tapeworm (Dipylidium caninum) and the hydatid tapeworm (Echinococcus granulosus).
Flea tapeworm can cause itching around the bottom and you may see tapeworm segments in your dog's faeces bearing similar appearance to white rice. More often than not, dogs do not show any symptoms of tapeworm infestation which is why prevention is so important.
The best way to prevent flea tapeworms is to maintain regular flea protection for your dog. Flea tapeworm is transmitted to your dog by ingesting a flea carrying the infective tapeworm, while chewing or grooming themselves. Hydatid tapeworm is thankfully more rare but can cause serious disease in humans if accidentally infected. Dogs can become infested by scavenging off carcasses of grazing animals or fed raw meat offal. Both tapeworms can live in the dog's gastrointestinal system for years, making prevention extremely important.
It's generally advised that dogs are treated for tapeworm every three months, in addition to regular flea prevention. However, dogs residing in rural locations which pose a higher risk of exposure to hydatid tapeworm from deceased animals, fed a raw diet or exposed to raw offal, it is recommended these dogs receive tapeworm treatment every six weeks. In addition to these measures, it is also important to maintain good hand hygiene after touching your dog. Find out more abouthow often to worm a dog.
