How do I choose the right size cat tree for my home?

Consider the available space in your home and the height of the tree. Ensure it fits comfortably in the designated area without overcrowding. Additionally, choose a tree with multiple platforms and levels that suit your cat's jumping ability and preference, keeping in mind that taller trees may appeal more to cats that enjoy climbing. For kittens and senior cats, a lower cat tree is ideal. Kittens are still developing their coordination and can be prone to falls, making lower platforms safer as they learn to climb. Senior cats, often dealing with arthritis or joint pain , may find jumping difficult or uncomfortable. A tree closer to the ground allows them to enjoy the benefits of climbing and perching without putting strain on their joints, supporting their mobility and comfort as they age.

What are the benefits of a scratching post for my cat?

Scratching posts provide cats with a designated area to stretch, scratch, and maintain their claws. They help prevent furniture damage, support healthy claw maintenance, and can also provide an outlet for stress and boredom. Additionally, scratching posts encourage exercise and can promote natural behaviours.

How can I encourage my cat to use a scratcher?

To encourage your cat to use a scratcher, place it in a high-traffic area, preferably near their favourite resting or play spots, or close to where they currently scratch. Adding catnip spray can make the scratcher more appealing and entice them to explore it. Since cats may have specific texture preferences, experiment with different types of scratchers—sisal rope, carpet, or cardboard —to see what they enjoy. Reinforce the behaviour by offering treats and praise when they use the scratcher, helping to establish it as a positive habit.

Are there cat trees designed for multiple cats?

Yes, many cat trees are designed specifically for multiple cats, featuring spacious platforms, several scratching posts, and hideaways. When selecting a tree for multiple cats, look for one with enough space for each cat to climb and play without competing for territory.

Can scratching posts help prevent destructive behaviour?

Yes, scratching posts can prevent destructive behaviour by offering your cat a designated space to fulfil their natural scratching instincts. When provided with an appropriate outlet, cats are less likely to target furniture, carpets, or other household items, helping to minimise damage around the home.
